2019 Toyota Corolla iM – New Modular Design

2019 Toyota Corolla iM

The current Auris is a great car for anyone looking to get a commuter vehicle. Unfortunately though, the car isn’t great for much else. It lacks the driving characteristics of its rivals and its engines are average at best. Luckily it looks like Toyota also noticed this, so the upcoming model will be somewhat more special. Even though the manufacturer didn’t say much about it, photographers already managed to take a good look at the future 2019 Toyota Corolla iM (Auris). The new model is set to be based on Toyota’s all new TNGA architecture which also underpins the Prius. This new modular design will allow them to drop the weight of the car while also making it stiffer. Better structural rigidity also means better driving characteristics and NVH levels, both of which were a problem on its predecessor.

In detail

With the new platform the new Auris is also going to boast a new running gear. While the details are still scarce about it, we can expect the car to feature a fully independent suspension setup across the range. This should allow it to be more comfortable and easier to drive without ruining the driving characteristics.

The camouflaged test mule we have seen a while ago also had some interesting design cues but more on that later. In terms of size, the car definitely looks wider and lower than its predecessor. The wheelbase also seems longer but the overall length of the car doesn’t seem all that different. This should allow Toyota to offer more space inside the cabin while also maintaining the footprint relatively unchanged.

Release date and Price

Considering the test mule looks pretty much ready to go, it is safe to assume the upcoming 2019 Toyota Corolla iM will hit the showrooms in the early 2018. However, the car should only go on sale closer to the end of the year. Its price shouldn’t change all that much over the current model. The base car should cost right around $20,000 with the higher end versions going for far more than that.

The interior of 2019 Toyota Corolla iM

The ongoing model features a rather basic cabin. While the layout is great and easy to use, the materials are not that inspiring, the driving position is a bit unusual while the design is lackluster. We hope the 2019 Toyota Corolla iM (Auris) will be nothing like that.

If the rumors are anything to go by then the car will feature a brand new cabin which should set the trend for Toyota’s future vehicles. We can expect a more European design with a wider center stack and fewer buttons than before. The driving position should also get lower which would further aid the driving characteristics.

The design

Not only will the new car be slightly lower and wider, but its design will be quite a bit more aggressive too. We can clearly see through the camouflage that the car will feature wider and slimmer headlights, a new grille, a more aggressive bumper as well as wider fenders.

The hood will boast a clam shell design while the rather aggressive rear window rake will make the new 2019 Toyota Corolla iM (Auris) look a lot more like a coupe than ever before. With this model we can also expect a more aggressive-looking version but nothing has been confirmed up to this point.

2019 Toyota Corolla iM Specs

The most basic version of the new Corolla iM will likely feature a 1.2 liter turbo-four with around 115 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque. The higher end versions of the car should make use of a new generation 1.5 liter turbo-three. This one should be capable of around 150 to 180 horsepower and up to 200 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will likely be mated to a 6 speed manual and both of them should be available with front wheel drive only.

This generation of the car may receive a hotter version as well. This one would boast a BMW-supplied 2.0 liter turbo-four with over 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. With it, Toyota would finally have a capable hot-hatchback which hasn’t happened in more than a decade now. Unlike the others, this one is likely going to mate a 6 speed manual to an all wheel drive system with electronic differentials.
